Humanitarian aid to the people of Camagüey

Since its inception, the Madison-Camagüey Sister City Association (MCSCA) has strived to gather and deliver humanitarian assistance to the people of Camagüey.

Over time, we have identified several areas of need. Of these, the most important has been that of Camagüey's Pediatrics Hospital. Most of the medicines, supplies and equipment hand-carried by our members have been destined for this hospital and for the medical attention of children anywhere in the province of Camagüey.

In addition, we have donated much needed supplies and medicines to polyclinics and homes for pregnant women in need of special pre-natal care. We have also supported such medical facilities as the maternity hospital, the school for the hearing impaired, the aids sanatorium, and the Amalia Simoni General Hospital among others.

In the year 2001, MCSCA took on the sponsorship of the venerable and famed Camagüey Municipal Concert Band and began a community-wide effort to find instruments and music supplies in order to rehabilitate the Band, which had fallen on hard times. It is a classic brass and wind instrument band, founded in 1919, and winner of many national awards. With our assistance, they have regained their pride and can now be seen performing at various events in the city, whether at official ceremonies, religious parades or at the historic Parque Agramonte on a Sunday afternoon.

Recently, we have begun a relationship with the Ballet de Camagüey. The only city other than Havana to have its own ballet company, Camagüey is especially proud of this accomplishment, so we were inspired to work with them and to assist them in finding materials and other supplies difficult or very costly to obtain in Cuba.

A project to send 300 bicycles to Camagüey in 2005 was very successful but has been held up on account of the difficulties of shipping other than medical donations to Cuba. We expect to continue searching for a way to accomplish this endeavor in the near future.

MCSCA has also teamed up with the Wisconsin Medical Project to send medical supplies and equipment to Camagüey, and on an individual basis, our members have been able to help simply by developing friendships and people-to-people relationships.

You can join us in these continuing efforts by becoming a member of the Association or by making your donation. All donations are tax deductible and are fully dedicated toward humanitarian assistance.
