The United States and Cuba have concluded their first meeting this Tuesday on migration  issues with a favorable outcome described by both sides as “fruitful.”  This first encounter  addressed ways to achieve a safe, legal and orderly flow in the migration between both countries.

“The U.S.  sees these conversations as a means to achieve practical and positive results that will contribute to bringing about accords” on matters of migration, according to a press release made after the completion of the meeting which took place in New York.

This Tuesday’s meeting was the first encounter between the two countries to discuss this major issue since 2003 when the Bush administration suspended dialog with the island.  At the end of last May, Havana accepted Washington’s offer to resume the meetings.

Taking part on behalf of the U.S. is the undersecretary of state for Latin American affairs, Craig Kelly; It was not announced who represented Cuba at the meeting. …

Estados Unidos y Cuba han concluido este martes su primera reunión sobre asuntos migratorios con un saldo favorable para ambas partes, que han calificado de “fructífero” este primer encuentro centrado en las maneras de lograr que el flujo migratorio entre ambos países sea seguro, legal y ordenado.

“Estados Unidos ve estas conversaciones como una manera de lograr resultados prácticos y positivos que contribuyan a la plena entrada en vigor de los acuerdos”, en materia migratoria, según un comunicado de prensa emitido al término de la reunión que se celebró en Nueva York.

El de este martes es el primer encuentro de ambos países para hablar de esta cuestión capital desde que en 2003 la Administración republicana de George W. Bush suspendiera el diálogo con la isla. La Habana aceptó a finales del pasado mayo la oferta de Washington de reanudar las reuniones.

Por parte de Washington participa en las conversaciones el subsecretario de Estado adjunto para América Latina, Craig Kelly, pero no se ha precisado quién representará a La Habana en el encuentro.
